Take a Walk with Us to Perry County

By Terri Byrd, Associate Coordinator for AlabamaCBF

What started as one man taking a walk has turned into a journey for several people across Alabama.  Brent McDougal, Coordinator for Alabama CBF, decided six months ago that he wanted to walk from the city streets of Birmingham to the rural roads of Perry County to raise awareness of poverty in Alabama’s black belt.  He also hoped that the walk would provide an opportunity to raise money for Sowing Seeds of Hope, a rural poverty initiative in Perry County.

When McDougal shared his dream with Ruth Perkins Lee, the moderator for Alabama CBF and a minister at First Baptist Church Auburn, she asked how he would feel about some college students joining him on the walk.  The idea took hold and several individuals and groups are now planning to join the Walk to Perry County, March 17th – 20th.

“We have people who have committed to walking the full 74 miles over four days and some who will just one of those days,” says McDougal.  “How far they walk doesn’t matter as much as joining the goal of raising awareness and money for Sowing Seeds of Hope.”

Churches can participate in multiple ways. Congregations can encourage people to do the full walk or a portion of the walk; they can sponsor a walker ($250, all of which goes to benefit Sowing Seeds of Hope); prepare a meal for walkers or serve in hospitality for the overnight stays; or come to Perry County for a day of service and walk the last mile on Saturday, March 20.

Sowing Seeds of Hope is a poverty initiative in partnership with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship through Together for Hope which reaches out to the people in the twenty poorest counties in the United States.
